We have made a large effort to open the school tomorrow and to try to ensure the safety of all.

The paths from the church carpark to the school have been cleared and gritted (for funeral today), so it may suit some to park in the church car park and walk with your child to school.

As at 5:45pm today Monday this is the situation…

- The paths to the door of the school have been cleared and gritted.

Recent Parent-Teacher Meetings

Thank you to all who attended recent P/T meetings. If you havent met your child’s teacher(s) and wish to do so, please contact Sue in the school office to make an appointment.

Based on feedback from all concerned it seems the online booking and meeting on one day were successful and we hope to continue with that system next year. It is also agreed that a small increase in the time slots to about 10-12 minutes each would be beneficial to avoid too much waiting around.

Please remember if you are concerned about anything in the school, please contact the class teacher or Principal to make an appointment to discuss.

Review of healthy eating policy

We are currently reviewing our healthy eating policy. If you would like to add any comments or suggestions please contact the school or send same by email to scoilbhrideoffice@gmail.com

Board of Management will meet on Tuesday next 12th of December. The Board wishes all our school community a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Cost of schooling and Contributions for certain activities

We are very much aware of the difficulties that many of us experience as we try to educate our children. This is especially obvious at this time of year as we try to pay for activities and also prepare for the next school year with new uniforms, books etc.

We have been looking at how we as a school could help in a small way to ease this burden into the future and have decided that for the next school year the following activities will be paid for by general school fundraising or Parents Association Fundraising; (to be reviewed each year depending on funds available)

French for Rang 5 and Rang 6 which did have a fee of €2 per week will now be free.

Gymnastics for all classes which did have a fee of €1.50 per week will now be free.

Dance for all classes which did have a fee of €1.50 per week will now be free.

Violin Class for Rang 5 and Rang 6 reduced to €1 per week.

Science Foundation Ireland Discover Science and Maths Award.

We were delighted to receive a letter last week informing us that we had been successful in our application for the Science foundation Ireland Discover science and maths Award. Special thanks to Ms. Glendon & Ms Grimes and their fourth class pupils who led the process for the whole school. They submitted a comprehensive digital log outlining all their work in promoting STEM (Science,Technology,Engineering and Maths) among all the classes in the school. We look forward to receiving our award in the near future. Here is a small sample of some of the work involved, this experiment helped us understand how our lungs work..

“Working in pairs, we helped each other to make our lungs. The balloon was a bit tricky to pull over the lip of the bottle.” The balloon inflated when we pulled down our “diaphragm” . This happens in our lungs when our diaphragm muscle moves down. It pulls in air and our lungs fill up.” The pupils explained how their model lungs show us how our lungs work.

Dance, Gymnastics and new I-Pads

We have had three weeks of dance with Rosalie and are really enjoying the experience. It is great fun taking part in creative dance to the latest tunes. Next Tuesday will be our last dance class and Gymnastics with Linda will kick off next Thursday for 4 weeks. Please note the following for Gymnastics class:

  • Long hair must be tied back (low ponytail or plait)

  • - Absolutely no jewellery or big hair clips

  • - No loose swinging clothes (Girls must have pants, skirts are inappropriate and pose a health hazard by coming down over their bodies if they are standing upside down)

  • - Runners or bare feet or socks with grips on the soles of them

We recently took delivery of a suite of Apple I-Pads. Hopefully over the coming months and years many pupils will get the opportunity to use them to help with their class learning. The Department of education strongly encourages schools to integrate the use of Information and Communications Technology (I.C.T.) across the curriculum.
