3rd Class Hurling League

Over the past few week we have been playing a hurling league. We were divided into 4 teams – Laois, Tipperary, Galway and Kildare. We all played each other once and the two teams with the most points contested the final.

The final was a very exciting encounter between Galway and Kildare. After extra time Galway were victorious. Everyone took part in the matches and we really enjoyed playing each other.

The Yuckee Prince

We performed a short drama based on our novel The Yuckee Prince. We really enjoyed reading the book as it is very funny and exciting. We enjoyed practicing the drama even more!  Some other classes and some of our parents came to see the short play.

3rd Class meet Sam and Liam!

When Liam O’Neill, president of the GAA, came to visit we were all very excited. Especially as he brought two very special guests with him, the Sam Maguire and the Liam McCarty Cups. Hopefully it won’t be long before we get either of these cups back in Rathdowney again!

Talk On Fire Safety

A Visit from Rathdowney Fire Brigade

0n the 21 of October 2013 some men from the fire brigade came to talk to us about FIRE SAFETY. We learned a lot about how to keep our homes safe from fire. Here are some of the facts we learned that could help prevent a fire.

  • Don’t dry clothes on an electric heater because it could catch fire.
  • You have to be 15,16, or 17 to use matches or a lighter.
  • The fire service’s number is 999 or 112.
  • Don’t leave a candle near curtains.
  • You can’t throw water on an electrical fire.
  • Turn off switches and pull out the plug when you are finished with it.
  • Never leave too many things plugged in at the same time.
  • Never leave a plug on in when you are not there.
  • Don’t leave a candle or anything that has fire down low where your little brother or sister can get near it.
  • Also, if you leave the house to go outside and your cat or dog knocked the candle over they could start a fire.
  • Don’t leave a wire hanging down where a little child can reach up and pull it down.
  • Check your fire alarm once a week to see if it’s working because if you don’t and a fire started you might not be able to get out in time.
  • Try to make sure that you get your fire alarm new batteries every year.
  • Don’t leave a stove or cooker door open because if you do and a piece of paper with fire on it fell out onto a piece of wood it could start a fire.
  • If a fire started and you and your family got out of the house but your really favourite thing was still inside the house wait until the fire brigade comes and they will get that thing out for you.

Never do this!

Never set an alarm off when you don’t need it, because someone else that lives in a different place could actually have a fire in their house.
